UNDERSTANDING SENSORY PREFERENCES TO SUPPORT DAILY FUNCTIONING

Sensory Profiles

Sensory Profiles assess how individuals respond to different sensory inputs—such as sound, touch, movement, or light. These insights help identify sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviors, guiding the development of personalised strategies to support regulation, focus, and participation in everyday activities at home, school, or in the community.

What is a Sensory Profile?

A Sensory Profile is a structured assessment tool used by occupational therapists to understand how a person processes and responds to sensory input in daily life. It helps identify sensory sensitivities or preferences across different areas such as touch, sound, movement, taste, and visual input. This understanding supports better strategies for regulation and participation.

Who benefits from a Sensory Profile assessment?

Sensory Profiles are helpful for individuals of all ages, especially those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, developmental delays, or learning difficulties. They are commonly used with children but also highly effective for adults who may be struggling with sensory overload, anxiety, or functional difficulties at home, work, or in social settings.

What happens during the assessment?

The assessment usually involves parent or caregiver questionnaires (for children) or self-reports (for older teens and adults), along with interviews and observations. The occupational therapist uses this information to build a detailed picture of the person’s sensory processing patterns and how these may impact daily tasks, behavior, and emotional regulation.

How is the information used after the assessment?

The findings from the Sensory Profile help therapists create personalised sensory strategies and supports. These may include routines, sensory diets, classroom modifications, environmental changes, or calming tools. The goal is to improve comfort, attention, participation, and independence in everyday environments like home, school, or work.

Can the Sensory Profile be used for NDIS planning?

Yes. The Sensory Profile is often included as part of Functional Capacity Assessments or therapy reports to support NDIS funding requests. It provides evidence of sensory-related support needs and informs decisions around therapy goals, environmental modifications, or assistive technology.
